Using music recording software, music therapists can use a patient’s heartbeat as the rhythmic ground on which a song chosen by the patient or family is overlaid. This heartbeat song could be a meaningful song that has been used or discussed in sessions, or an original song written by the patient or family with the music therapist. Heartbeat songs always use the patient’s own heartbeat but it may also integrate the heartbeat recordings of parents, siblings, spouses – a unique representation of family centered care.
In pediatric and adult oncology, intensive care, and palliative care, we have used heartbeat recordings to accompany original songs written about the patient’s feelings and perceptions about their illness.
